SBS 2011 self signed certificate not updating in SBS console after renewal

The self signed certificate on a SBS 2011 server was expiring, so I ran the Fix My Network wizard and renewed.

This updated the certificate when you go to the OWA web page, however in SBS Console under network > connectivity > view certificate properties the date had not changed.

To create a new Certificate installation Package, I deleted the old one > ran the Fix My Network wizard > created a new package.  This had a different date again.

To get the certificate in the SBS console to match the OWA certificate > I ran the Add a trusted certificate wizard > select I want to use a certificate that is already installed on the server > selected the newly created self-issued certificate.  Now if I View Certificate Properties in the SBS console it matches the OWA certificate.

To update the install package SBSCertificate.cer file > on non-domain joined system > run IE as administrator > open OWA site > import cert into IE > in IE options > content tab > certificates > find certificate and export as SBSCertificate.cer > save into Certificate Distribution Package folder after renaming the old cer file.

HP Laserjet 1150 not printing

1100 series low end HP printers do not have new HP drivers and will not work with universal drivers.

Can sometimes get drivers from Microsoft Update.

On a 1150 that was just printing “Unsupported Personality”, I have had some success using a Lexmark T620 driver instead.  Some other people have had success using a HP 3055 driver and setting to raster-graphics.

Outlook hyperlinks not working

Had a system with internet hyperlinks not working in Outlook. This started happening after Google Chrome was uninstalled.

To resolve I pasted and ran the following lines in a command prompt:

REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.htm /ve /d htmlfile /f

REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html /ve /d htmlfile /f

REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.shtml /ve /d htmlfile /f

REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.xht /ve /d htmlfile /f

REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.xhtml /ve /d htmlfile /f

Then made Internet Explorer the default browser.

Add Terminal Server (RDS) to SBS 2011 Remote Web Workplace (RWW)

Locate the following registry key:

  1. Add a new key named RemoteUserPortal
  2. Under the new key RemoteUserPortal create a new Multi-String Value entry named TsServerNames .  Edit the new entry and insert the name of your RDS server.  If you have multiple RDS servers add them on a separate line.

For this to work the RDS server must be in the SBSServers Active Directory OU.  I create a OU under the SBSServers OU called RDSServers, so that I can easily apply specific GPO’s to RDS servers.

Lenovo Fingerprint Reader not Working Windows 7

On my new Lenovo T520 laptop, the fingerprint reader was not working at logon, or if the system was locked. I had already registered some fingerprints in the lenovo software.

To get this working I had to go into control panel > Biometric Devices > Change Biometric Settings > Ensure “Biometrics on” radio button is selected > Tick “Allow users to log on to Windows using their fingerprints” and what fixed it for me “Allow users to log on to a domain using their fingerprints” > Save Changes

Apply Patches and Updates to ESXi 5 with CLI – Single Host

Applying patches and upgrades via CLI on ESXi 5 has changed from the way it was done on previous versions.

The main changes are the commands are different and the updates are now copied up to the Host datastore, before being applied.  There are also other methods to apply updates such as update manager, but for a single host I find CLI the best.

For more information see:–single-use-esxcli-how-to

To do via SSH see:
